OUR HISTORY
Bluebells
A.F.C. was founded in 1950 to promote sport in the Wynberg area which was occupied
predominantly by members of the Muslim faith. The Cape District Football
Association having its Headquarters in Wynberg should have been the natural
home for our club. However, the club was forced to seek affiliation with Unions
outside Wynberg because Cape District at the time, practiced discrimination
against people of the Muslim faith.
We affiliated
to the old CAFDA Union playing games on the grounds where the present CAFDA
Village is situated. Through force of circumstances the CAFDA Union ceased to
exist and we affiliated to the Cosmopolitan Union, based in Salt River. From
Salt River we then moved to the Retreat Union where meetings were held at the
Retreat Hotel and games were played on the open grounds behind the hotel.
Clubs like
Bluebells, Blackpool, Lillies and others were strongly motivated during the
1950’s by the principles of non-racialism. In the years ’57, ’58 and 59 we made
formal application for membership to Cape District and on each occasion was rejected
due to the Union’s discriminatory clause in their constitution. In 1960 Cape
District removed this hateful clause and players of Muslim faith were then
accepted into various clubs. The Bluebells Club rejoiced as we were
instrumental in persistently bringing this shameful practice to the notice of
the public, through the formation of the Wynberg Action Committee and letters
to the press.
Our 1961
application for affiliation was once again turned down but other means of
gaining entry was found. All members joined up with Duncan Rovers A.F.C. We
handed over all assets and only requested that they adopt our colours of Royal
Blue and White. In 1971 the name was changed to Bluebells A.F.C. and since then
there has been no looking back.
During our
period at C.D.F.A. the Bluebells club has always provided crowd-pleasing soccer
and our record with C.D.F.A. is unblemished and we are committed to keep it as
such.
